SERVANTS QUARTERS
To these ends, SERVANTS QUARTERS participants undertake a variety of
activities so that they may grow intellectually, practice community more
readily and cultivate other spiritual disciplines.

Intellectual Growth:  Through deliberate biblical worldview studies, participants
will learn to read the LORD’S general revelation – in creation, culture and
conscience – with greater understanding, articulate their beliefs, identify and
critically assess competing beliefs of others, and confront inconsistencies with
truth and grace.   The curriculum requires reading, film viewing, short
reflection essays and regular discussion seminars.

Practicing Community:  We Americans often measure our worth by how busy and
productive we are.  This rush to get things done, as Dallas Willard observes,
“is a deadly enemy of kindness, and hence of love.”  Predictably and
regrettably, our haste often leads to isolated, individualistic lives that lack
supportive and edifying human relationships.  We will strive to overcome the
effects of this destructive perspective by exploring the disciplines of self-
giving and hospitality.  Through these activities, we will seek to know more of
each other and, thus, of God.

Other Spiritual Disciplines:  To overcome materialism and live in keeping with a
biblical worldview requires more than feeding our minds with truth and
practicing community.  Participants will take part in community prayer and
fasting days, devotions, and frank and challenging self-assessment and
discussions about the use of time, talent and money.  We will explore the
disciplines of simplicity, solitude, sacrifice and generosity.  The exercise and
exploration of these disciplines will help us to understand how we might more
constantly experience gratitude, contentment and peace.

Outcomes:  Over the course of the program, participants are expected to:

  • Develop a solid understanding of stewardship and servanthood that
flow from a maturing biblical worldview.
  • Seek opportunities to teach biblical stewardship and servanthood
principles to those in their spheres of influence.
  • Work to dismantle the intrigue of money, possessions and power and
creatively deconstruct its hold on ourselves and our neighbors.
  • Develop a habit of giving generously and sacrificially.
  • Develop a plan to become and remain debt-free.
  • Understand better what it means to live intentionally and in simplicity,
sharing all we have through biblical hospitality, welcoming everyone
    with the love of Christ.
